## How Utilities Prepare for Extreme Weather Events

Mobile generation helps utilities prepare for extreme weather by adding fast, flexible grid support before outages occur.

In Texas, Mitsubishi Power Aero supplied five FT8® MOBILEPAC® mobile gas turbine packages, adding 155 megawatts of emergency backup generation faster than conventional power projects. The multi-fuel, 31-megawatt MOBILEPAC® units can support grid resilience during events such as the 2021 Texas polar vortex or other extreme weather events. Together, the turbines can provide power for more than 150,000 homes and businesses that might otherwise lose power.

## How Mobile Generation Reduces Outage Risk

Mobile generation reduces outage risk by giving utilities fast-responding power that can stabilize the grid when supply drops or frequency fluctuates.

In Algeria’s isolated Adrar region, Mitsubishi Power Aero FT8® MOBILEPAC® mobile gas turbine units responded within milliseconds after the grid suddenly lost 27 megawatts, helping prevent a major blackout. The units support grid firming, frequency regulation, voltage control, and renewable integration, especially on grids with variable renewable generation from wind and solar. Mitsubishi Power Aero Load Sharing technology was installed on several units, and the utility reported no frequency fluctuations, improving power quality and reducing blackout risk.

## Power Restoration After Natural Disasters

Mobile generation helps utilities restore power after natural disasters by adding fast, flexible generation and capacity where grid infrastructure is damaged.

When Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico’s electric grid in 2017, Mitsubishi Power provided three MOBILEPAC® units at the Palo Seco Power Plant to support recovery. When earthquakes then struck in late 2019 and early 2020, the units delivered vital emergency power to residents and businesses. Because MOBILEPAC® units can be moved elsewhere on the island in a matter of days, they give utilities a flexible way to manage future hurricanes, earthquakes, and grid emergencies. They also can operate in island mode, to form a separate microgrid independent of interconnection with the main power grid.

Extreme weather, natural disasters, grid emergencies, and sudden capacity shortfalls are unpredictable. Planning ahead helps utilities reduce outage risk, restore power faster, and identify mobile or supplemental generation before the next emergency.

# EPC Support for Resilient Power Projects

The Mitsubishi Power Aero in house Engineering, Procurement, Construction (EPC) firm, Energy Services LLC, helps utilities and independent power producers move power generation projects from early planning to commercial operation with a single accountable team.

Through Energy Services LLC, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Power, customers can streamline the process of engaging knowledgeable, experienced engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and long-term plant support.

- **Plan the project:** Feasibility studies, financial modeling, permitting support, and early project definition help utilities evaluate fast-start generation, mobile power, temporary power, repowering, or turnkey power plant options.
- **Engineer and procure the system:** We design, specify, and procure the main power generation equipment and balance-of-plant systems, including fuel systems, emissions treatment, transformers, power conditioning, and high-voltage grid interconnection.
- **Build and commission the plant:** Our turnkey EPC model supports construction, installation, testing, commissioning, and technical support before commercial operation, reducing handoffs and improving project accountability.
- **Support performance over time:** After commissioning, we can support operations, maintenance, field engineering, equipment upgrades, emissions and noise mitigation, relocation, repowering, and retrofit projects.

# Frequently asked questions

How can mobile generation support disaster recovery and extreme weather response?

Mobile generation supports disaster recovery by providing temporary utility-scale power when storms, wildfires, floods, earthquakes, or extreme weather damage grid infrastructure. The Mitsubishi Power Aero FT8® MOBILEPAC® mobile gas turbine can be transported by land, sea, or air to help utilities restore electricity to critical infrastructure while permanent repairs are underway.

How do utilities restore power quickly after outages?

Utilities restore power after outages by repairing damaged infrastructure, rerouting electricity, and deploying fast-response generation to replace lost capacity. Mobile power solutions like aero-derivative gas turbines can support grid recovery when transmission lines, substations, or power plants are unavailable, helping reduce outage duration and maintain service to homes, businesses, and critical facilities.

What is rapid-response power generation?

Rapid-response power generation refers to mobile, modular, or fast-start power systems that can be deployed quickly to meet emergency demand, grid instability, or sudden capacity shortfalls. Aero-derivative gas turbines and mobile power plants are common examples because they provide dispatchable, flexible grid support faster than conventional power plant projects.

How do fast-track gas turbines reduce outage risk?

Fast-track gas turbines reduce outage risk by adding dispatchable generation capacity before reliability problems become service interruptions. Utilities can use mobile or rapidly installed gas turbine packages to support reserve margins during maintenance outages, fuel disruptions, seasonal demand spikes, renewable intermittency, or extreme weather events.

What power solutions support critical infrastructure during emergencies?

Critical infrastructure often requires resilient power that can supplement the grid or operate when normal service is disrupted. Mobile gas turbines, temporary utility-scale generation, backup power systems, and microgrids can support hospitals, water treatment plants, military installations, data centers, and emergency operations centers during outages or grid emergencies.

How can utilities prepare for seasonal demand spikes and extreme heat?

Utilities can prepare for seasonal demand spikes and extreme heat by securing flexible generation, strengthening emergency response plans, and maintaining dispatchable reserve capacity. Mobile power plants and aero-derivative gas turbines can add temporary or supplemental generation during peak summer demand, heat waves, or periods of elevated reliability risk.

How can utilities address growing electricity demand from data centers?

Utilities can address data center load growth by combining long-term grid investment with faster-deploying generation resources. As AI, cloud computing, and digital infrastructure increase electricity demand, mobile gas turbines and aero-derivative power solutions can help bridge the gap between immediate capacity needs and longer-term transmission or generation projects.

What is the fastest way to add utility-scale power generation capacity?

The fastest way to add utility-scale generation is often through modular, mobile, or fast-track power solutions that require less site preparation than conventional power plants. The Mitsubishi Power Aero FT8® MOBILEPAC® gas turbine package is built for rapid deployment and can provide temporary or supplemental generation for emergencies, capacity shortfalls, and changing demand conditions.
