## Why Grid Operators Need Fast, Flexible Generation Capacity

### Power demand is soaring

Global electricity demand is rising due to electrification, industrial expansion, and the AI-driven datacenter boom. Power producers need faster ways to add capacity and deliver reliable, affordable electricity without waiting years for traditional power plants.

### Maintaining grid reliability as renewable energy expands

As wind and solar become a larger share of the electricity mix, utilities must manage renewable intermittency and sudden supply fluctuations. Fast-start, flexible backup power is needed to stabilize the grid when renewable output drops.

### Responding to peak demand, outages, and extreme events

Extreme weather, natural disasters, seasonal spikes, and equipment downtime can strain or disrupt power systems. Mobile, on-demand power resources can help utilities restore service, meet emergency demand, and improve grid resilience. They also provide vital capacity.

### Addressing power to infrastructure gaps

Many communities still lack reliable electricity, while others rely on aging grid infrastructure or insufficient local generation. Distributed power, behind-the-meter microgrids, and rapidly deployable generation can help serve underserved regions.

# Conventional Power Deployment Cannot Match Today's Cycles

Unlike other types of power generation, aero-derivative gas turbines are designed to transition from cold start to full power in minutes. When paired with a lithium-ion battery energy storage system, the combined package can deliver stored power to the grid within milliseconds while the turbine ramps up quickly to full power.

Mobile power packages allow customers to combine as many units as needed to meet local demand. Through our affiliate Energy Services LLC, Mitsubishi Power Aero has in-house EPC capabilities to tailor the installation to the most challenging sites, prefabricating most of the package to streamline the construction phase. A power producer can have a facility designed, built, and generating power in weeks, compared to the several years typically needed for a combined-cycle plant.

## Ensuring Grid Reliability Amid Extreme Weather Events

![grid reliability](https://go.aeropowermhi.com/hs-fs/hubfs/iStock-1369374862.jpg?width=3864&height=2576&name=iStock-1369374862.jpg)

In 2021, a series of winter storms crippled the Texas electricity grid, cutting power to 4.5 million homes and businesses, and causing $195 billion in economic losses. A year later, another icy storm again threatened the balance between power generation and demand. Thankfully, the Lone Star State’s ability to respond stayed ahead of peak demand. Had operators not acted swiftly to shed load, the grid would have become unstable, taking even more assets offline. Storms and other extreme weather events, including wildfires, drought, and flooding, underscore the need to maintain reliable on-demand supply. One key way to help ensure a resilient grid is to add fast-responding, flexible, on-demand power such as that provided by Mitsubishi Power Aero’s mobile gas turbine packages.
